The Johnstown Film & Wine Festival is a project of the Greater Johnstown Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class of 2006, in cooperation with the Johnstown Area Heritage Association. The 2007 festival was held July 12-14.

The following films were screened on Friday, July 13, 2007 in the theatre of the Johnstown Flood Museum.  

 

Block 1, beginning at 6:00 p.m.: 

 

Abyss of Soul by Cristina Pinhiero & Andre Scucato. The poet Antonin Artaud lived 9 years of his life in sanitoriums in France. It is believed he may have undergone as many as 50 electroshock treatments during this time.


The Passing by Aaron Gentzler (pictured). Sean and Annette have been best friends with Adam and Mary for years. In the aftermath of Annette's sudden death, Adam must help Sean cope with the loss of his wife, while he and Mary come to the realization that life will never be the same. Filmmaker Aaron Gentzler is a graduate of Penn State and makes his directorial debut with this film.


Never Everything by Timothy Gaer. A man who has everything comes to realize he has nothing to live for. Filmmaker Timothy Gaer is originally from northeast Pennsylvania, and his goal with the film was to shoot with virtually no dialogue that still tells a coherent story and affects the audience. 

 

Sensorium by Karen Aqua & Ken Field of Cambridge, Mass. A hand-drawn experimental animation exploring the relationship between music and image. Inspired by dance gestures and movements found in nature such as water and tide pools, the film is a study of sound/motion synthesis. An alphabet of abstract animated and musical gestures combines in various configurations to create a visible rhythm.
CHAP XV:12 by Fernando Pinheiro of Brazil. This experimental documentary explores the theme that "all you need is love." 

 

Cul De Sac by Ian Rummell of Johnstown. A brash college graduate searches for answers, while resenting and remonstrating societal norms. With the help of a younger brother and various illegal drugs, our tragic hero discovers the truth of American life.... or does he?  

 

Neglected Laundry by Dylan Hunter 

 

She Sank on Shallow Bank by Clifton Childree & Nikki Rollason of Miami. The film is a disjointed narrative about a washed-up girl and her magical postmortem adventures. Using sculpture, stop-motion animation, dance and music, two worlds become tightly intertwined.


A Cigar at the Beach by Stephen Keep Mills. Surreal, satiric and spiritual, this film is a modern tale starring the male psyche, as a married man filters the demands of domestic life through fantasy. Filmmaker Stephen Keep Mills is a stage, TV and film actor, and began writing and producing plays in 1985. This short marks his debut as a film director.
Block 2, beginning at 8:00 p.m.: 

 

*Youth Entry* Kyle & The Magic Cookie by Samuel Weber. This comedy is about a young boy who stumbles upon a genie who gives him a magic cookie. Kyle is told to eat the cookie when the time feels right -- and when he does, it sends poor Kyle on a journey he'll never forget. Filmmaker Samuel Weber is a senior at Cambria Heights High School. 

 

*Youth Entry* The Super School by Keegan Terek & Ryan Dabbs. It's Patrick's first day at the super school, and he's really excited! What he doesn't know is that he'll encounter very unique people, from his best friend Tom to a hot chick. By Keegan Terek and Ryan Dabbs, whose film "Odin's Super Safe Adventures" was screened in 2006.


*Youth Award Winner* "The Jig" by Racecar Backwards by Tom Getty. This music video spotlights Racecar Backwards' song "The Jig." By Tom Getty, who won the Youth Award at the 2006 festival. 

 

A Roof Above by Andy Kelemen. This short focuses on a woman who decides to leave her husband because her nephew is coming home. Filmmaker Andy Kelemen created this film as his senior thesis for graduation from Pittsburgh Filmmakers in video production. His film "The Cask of Amontillado" was screened at the 2006 festival. 

 

Coolsville by Blair Murphy. Filmmaker Blair Murphy of Windber hosted a party for artists, celebrating the American beat poets of the 1950s. This film is the final expression of that gathering. 

 

Get Tested -- by Todd Bennett of Altoona. This documentary is about an individual living with HIV, detailing his life while answering questions about the disease. Filmmaker Todd Bennett is a convergent media/communications student at Penn State Altoona.
