FolkFest 2004 Memories

What an amazing year! FolkFest 2004 was a year of firsts-our first year at the new festival park in downtown Johnstown and the first year for the Community Kitchen. As always, we had top-notch talent, including Celtic rockers Seven Nations, zydeco masters Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp Band, and America's polka king, Jimmy Sturr. They, along with 18 additional acts, provided more than 77 hours of free entertainment on four mainstages over the course of the three-day festival.

Three days of glorious late summer weather provided perfect festival conditions, as evidenced by the impressive crowds. There were more chairs than ever at the two largest festival stages, and many of the evening shows were standing room only. For the first time ever we had enough room to include dance areas at two of the stages, which were well-used by audiences enjoying everything from polka to zydeco to rockabilly.

We received a great deal of positive feedback on the atmosphere and layout of the new festival park. Bounded by the historic stone bridge and the Cambria Iron & Steel National Historic Landmark, the site provided views of beautiful hillside scenery, the Johnstown Flood Museum and the Inclined Plane. In fact, thanks to the generosity of Somerset Trust, more than 14,000 people enjoyed a free Inclined Plane ride on their way to the festival, making getting there an event in itself.
