Bill Kirchen on the FolkFest -- "a whole parallel universe of music." Bill Kirchen, former guitarist for Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen and the "Titan of the Telecaster," last played at FolkFest in 2004 (see picture). He was recently interviewed in Our Town Magazine; the following is an excerpt from the online version of the article: "If I saw someone do today what we did in 1967, I'm not sure it would work anymore. I think they've closed the door. There aren't as many wide and varied artists coming in. We were a wacky eight-piece playing boogie woogie from the forties and hardcore rockabilly and country," he said. One of the few places Kirchen said those artists still exist is festivals like the AmeriServ Johnstown FolkFest. "That's the great thing about the FolkFest. That is a whole parallel universe of music that has escaped that marketing strictly by the numbers," he said. "That's the heir to what I saw in '64 and '65 in Newport that really ruined me for normal work."
Shuttle system changes announced -- The FolkFest's free shuttle system has some changes in 2007. For complete details on the shuttle system, visit the Scrip, Shuttles, Parking page of this website. The Downtown Loop and the free Inclined Plane rides stay the same, but changes include: A new Cambria City loop, thanks to sponsor AmeriServ Financial The Log House Arts Festival will run its own shuttle from the Hiram G. Andrews Center, but only during that festival's hours.

Through that sponsorship, AmeriServ supports the festival financially and with more than 180 volunteers each year -- as well as providing in-kind help with printing and promotion. AmeriServ has once again renewed its title sponsorship for the 2007 festival. JAHA extends a sincere thank-you to AmeriServ Financial and all our FolkFest sponsors, who make it possible for the festival to feature free admission. |
Zydeco returns to the FolkFest -- FolkFest 2007's zydeco artist is Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers. Dwayne is the son of the late, great Rockin' Dopsie and grew up playing zydeco -- in fact, Dwayne played FolkFest 1993 at the age of 14 with his father's band. Today he is known as "The Hottest Accordion in America" and plays nationally and internationally, including annual appearances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival since 2000. Read more about Dwayne Dopsie and the rest of the 2007 lineup on the 2007 Performers page of this website. |
2007 lineup features past favorites -- The FolkFest is pleased to welcome back several popular artists to the festival, some of whom are playing in new bands. Returning to the FolkFest are: Bill Kirchen (who last played here in 2004); Eric Lindell Band (Lindell played as a part of a revue, the Louisiana Blues Throwdown, in 2003); Gigi Dover & Big Love, pictured (Dover played FolkFest in 1997 and 1999 with her former band, the Rank Outsiders); and Bill Deasy (who played in 1997 with his former band, Gathering Field). |
New sponsorship video now available -- The festival simply wouldn't be possible without the support of our sponsors. A new video explaining the benefits of sponsorship is now available -- JAHA would like to thank Clark Productions (production) and Geoff Miller of Woodland Marketing Management (narration) for their work on the video. If you're interested in finding out more about FolkFest sponsorship, contact Patti Genovese at 814-539-1889, ext. 309. |
FolkFest to take part in the second year of a state marketing program; 2006 survey data shows a jump in out-of-town visitors -- In 2006, FolkFest became one of 32 festivals chosen to participate in a festival marketing program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Tourism Office. Year Two of the program, which aims to attract out-of-town visitors to the events, was kicked off with a workshop held in Johnstown on October 3-4.
The program has been a great success for the FolkFest thus far. In 2006, the program enabled FolkFest to market itself outside of the immediate area, focusing on Pittsburgh and several other nearby cities. Survey results showed a 10% jump in out-of-town visitors in 2006 as compared to 2005, despite the rainy weather.
As a part of this program, the Johnstown FolkFest has been featured on a special music festival page on the state's tourism website, visitpa.com. That's Big Sandy & the Fly-Rite Boys in the banner photo, which was taken at FolkFest 2004. For more information on some of the other participating festivals, click here.
