Scrip, Shuttles, Parking
Updated August 14, 2007

Scrip

When you come onto festival grounds, you'll see one of several booths where you can purchase scrip, which you then use to purchase all food and drinks from official FolkFest vendors. In short, scrip is festival currency!

Through the use of scrip, the Johnstown Area Heritage Association collects commission on food and beverage sales to help cover costs associated with FolkFest, which total about $300,000. That's how we're able to keep the festival free.

FolkFest cares about preventing underage drinking and promoting responsible alcohol management. In 2007 we will have carding stations conveniently located near all festival pubs -- everyone who wishes to purchase beer or coolers must present their ID to be swiped, and will receive a wristband.

Free FolkFest Shuttles

Downtown loop: CamTran trolleys will circle downtown Johnstown, picking up riders at conveniently located shuttle stops near the parking garages; the Vine Street, Joseph Johns, and Fulton Connor Towers; and the bottom of the Inclined Plane. Look for signage to direct you to the nearest stop. The shuttle drop-off/pick-up point will be located at the corner of Washington and Johns, at the Johns Street Bridge entrance to the festival.

Cambria City shuttle: Thanks to the generosity of sponsor AmeriServ Financial, there will be a trolley service between FolkFest and the Cambria City Ethnic Festival. The trolley will stop at FolkFest near the Re/MAX gateway (Johns Street Bridge), at the Eternal Flame monument across the street from Point Stadium. The Cambria City stop will be located at 4th and Chestnut Streets.

Inclined Plane: In addition to the shuttlebuses, the Inclined Plane will be free during the entire festival. The Inclined Plane will run often as frequently as needed, rather than on its usual 15-minute schedule. The free Inclined Plane rides are made possible through the generosity of Somerset Trust and the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. From the bottom of the Inclined Plane, festivalgoers can ride a free shuttle from the corner of Vine and Union or take a short five-minute walk to festival grounds.

Hours: FolkFest shuttles and the free Inclined Plane rides will be available on an ongoing basis beginning one hour before the scheduled opening of the festival and end one hour after the scheduled closing of the festival.

Shuttle stops are marked on the 2007 map of the festival grounds.

Due to the rising costs of gasoline and decreased demand, the FolkFest will no longer run a shuttle from the Hiram G. Andrews Center in Upper Yoder. However, the Log House Arts Festival is running its own "yellow school bus" shuttle from the Hiram G. Andrews Center, with stops at the Log House Arts Festival and the Johns Street Bridge entrance to FolkFest. This "yellow school bus" shuttle will run every half-hour. Please note that the Log House Arts Festival "yellow bus" shuttle will only run during that festival's days, Saturday and Sunday, September 1 and 2, from 10:00 a.m-5:00 p.m.

Parking

Parking is available downtown in city-owned garages, and the city may charge $5 to park in these garages. To locate these garages from the downtown area, look for special FolkFest signage or the permanent blue wayfinding signs posted throughout downtown.

The open city-owned garages are as follows:

Lincoln Street garage

Transit Center garage, also called the "Main Street garage"

Intermodal Transportation Center on Vine & Walnut

In addition, a limited amount of free street parking is available. Festivalgoers who park downtown may either walk to the festival grounds or catch a free shuttle--look for signs that read "FolkFest Shuttle Stop," particularly along Main and Washington Streets.

Please note that there will be no vehicular access to the festival park from Minersville along Iron Street.

Watch carefully for the many pedestrians making their way to festival grounds. Shuttles will continuously circle back and forth from the shuttle stops and through downtown to provide direct transportation to and from the festival grounds.

Handicapped Parking

The FolkFest is pleased to provide a dedicated handicapped parking lot at the corner of Washington and Johns Streets, courtesy of Suppes Ford. You must have a handicap license plate and/or placard to use this lot; violators will be ticketed or towed.

In addition, handicap parking spaces are available at any of the city-owned parking garages downtown, and a shuttle will provide transportation to the festival grounds. All FolkFest shuttles are handicap accessible.

Individual Sponsors (formerly known as VIP Parking)

You can help support the FolkFest and get a prime parking spot by purchasing an individual sponsorship! The parking lot reserved for individual sponsors is located along Washington Street between Walnut and Johns Streets, just across the street from the festival. For a $75 contribution, individual sponsors will receive:

  • A parking pass for the reserved lot

  • Two laminated credentials that will give you entrance to the sponsor lounge, located in the train station! This lounge will feature comfortable seating, a cash bar with beer, wine and mixed drinks, and best of all -- flush toilets. See the 2007 festival map for the location of the Individual Sponsor parking lot and the the train station lounge.

Additional laminated credentials will be available for $20 each.

Reminders about purchasing individual sponsorships have been sent out; if you didn't receive one, you can download a PDF copy of the form, and mail it to us at PO Box 1889, Johnstown PA 15907. Questions? Contact Gwen Hartnett at 814-539-1889, x301.
