The Tribune-Democrat is honored for promoting and preserving significant stories of our region through books, including:

  • Disaster's Wake: A Retrospective of the 1977 Johnstown Flood (2007) Ð Published by to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the flood, the book includes an overview and timeline of the disaster, information on how different areas were impacted, and reprints of newspaper articles from that time, and many contemporary photographs. Most importantly, it includes survivors' first-hand stories of their experiences of the flood and its aftermath.

  • Slap Shots and Snapshots: 50 Seasons of Pro Hockey in Johnstown (2007)Ð A comprehensive collection of stories, photographs and statistics related to Johnstown's rich hockey tradition and its professional teams, the Blue Birds, Jets, Wings and Chiefs.

  • Domes and Spires (2008) - A tribute to 50 of the region's historically and
architecturally significant churches. Each church is highlighted with multiple color photographs, a short narrative history, and details on the dates of construction, primary materials, architectural design, and denomination.

  • Homelands: A History of the People of the Johnstown Region (2011) Ð Based on a newspaper series that ran monthly during 2010, the book details the rich ethnic history of Johnstown. Chapters on Italian, African, Irish, Scotting, English, Croatian, Slovak, Serbian, Carpatho-Rusyn, German, Polish, Hungarian, and present-day immigrants are included, with many interviews and recipes.

  • Heroes Were Made: The Story of Flight 93 (2011) Ð A book about the victims, the memorial and the community of supporters of Flight 93, which went down in a field near Shanksville, Pa. during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. It includes a foreword by former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge.

The Tribune Democrat is also honored as a champion of what makes Johnstown unique. The paper highlights what is good with weekly "Laurels," and draws attention to those who work to help others and make this a better place to live with "Person of the Week." Annual features such as the "Progress Report" and "Simply the Best" spotlight positive things about the community. Finally, the paper promotes charitable causes and events through editorial and advertising support.
